Khartoum, Aug. 9 (SUNA) - The joint meeting between the Government of Sudan and the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) was held today, where the government side was chaired by Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Executive Committee for Coordination with the Mission Ambassador Daffallah Al-Haj Ali, while UN Secretary General Special Representative to Sudan Mr. Volker Perthes headed UNITAMS’ side.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed keenness of the Government of Sudan to cooperate with the UN mission in accordance with the mandate issued to it by the Security Council, to assist in the transition and support the democratic transition procedures, especially providing the necessary support to the Electoral Commission and other commissions, and mobilizing international support for the implementation of the Juba Peace Agreement, including the security arrangements, particularly disarmament, reintegration and demobilization and technical support for law enforcement institutions.
For his part, Mr. Perthes affirmed the mission's commitment to support the transition process, and explained that despite the challenges that impeded the flow of development aid, the mission is still making efforts to carry out its duty under the mandate, including coordinating of the arrival of humanitarian aid to refugees and displaced persons in particular besides support for the efforts of the agricultural season, in addition to political support for the implementation of the Juba Peace Agreement, and support for the political process in order to reach a national consensus for the success of the transitional period.
The two sides also stressed the importance of expanding the base of peace by joining the rest of the movements to the peace agreement in the country, and continuing to coordinate efforts between the two sides at the backdrop of the matrix presented by Sudan to the Security Council, regarding the priorities of requirements to support the transition in Sudan and the implementation of the Juba Peace Agreement.
